-As Ukrainian forces retreat from the town of Soledar – giving Russia a rare military ‘success’ despite massive casualties – they also got long-sought-for good news: announcements they will be receiving shipments of A1 Abrams tanks from the U.S. and Leopard 2 tanks from Germany. The Leopard announcement is especially significant, as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had been seen by NATO allies as dragging his and Germany’s feet for the support. Germany had been Russia’s biggest purchaser of natural gas, though they have weaned themselves off that supply and are now seen as aiding Ukraine for what is thought to be a spring offensive to rid the country of Russian invaders once and for all.
